Back To Main Menu. The 56-bed hospital, based in Carrollton near the Mississippi state line, is closing Friday, the only hospital in the county. The Pickens County Health Care Authority made the announcement, saying the hospital’s financial situation is unsustainable and that for several years it “has experienced declining patient volumes.”As U.S. Terri Sewell said in a statement, once the hospital closes, “thousands of residents of Pickens County will have to drive nearly an hour for hospital services.” The closest hospitals to Carollton are in Eutaw, Tuscaloosa, Fayette and Macon, Miss., but the closest is 38 miles away. Researchers at the healthcare analytics firm Chartis Group say that rural hospitals are “most vulnerable” to closure based on several factors - including revenue, system affiliation and the lack of Medicaid expansion.Jones said the closure should be “yet another wakeup call” for action.“My team and I have been working closely with other members of the congressional delegation to find long-term solutions to help rural hospitals like Pickens County Medical Center stay open, but there is a clear step our state leaders could take that would help: expanding Medicaid,” Jones said. 'I sincerely hope that no other community has to suffer their hospital closing its doors because of our inability to put partisan differences aside and work together to save our rural hospitals.”The closure also deals a blow to the local economy, as the hospital employed about 150 people. On Tuesday and Wednesday, it hosted healthcare job fairs with representatives from Greene County Health System & NHS Management, DCH and Baptist Hospital, among others.
